Description:

Why does JRCALC recommend giving an anti-emetic prophylactically when an opioid is administered for patients diagnosed with a confirmed STEMI?
The primary purpose of using anti-emetics prophylactically is to prevent opiate-induced nausea and vomiting. Vomiting risks not absorbing antiplatelets, possible aspiration and agitation due to nausea whilst lying flat on the table at the PPCI centre. This significantly impacts patient experience and treatment effectiveness. Approximately one in three patients experience nausea due to the STEMI, and opioids can exacerbate this.
